Energy Absorption & Evolution
Thousands of years ago energy was in short supply so our digestive system evolved to absorb the maximum amount of energy from food. It is now so efficient at absorption that we can absorb around ten kilograms of sugar in a day, that’s around 40,000 Calories!
The problem today is that most foods we buy contain added sugars and fats in order to satisfy our tastes, and the result is a weight loss problem. A huge cabbage which would have been a good source of energy long ago contains the same amount of energy as a bag of potato chips (crisps). Yet not many people could actually manage a whole cabbage.
Another problem with today’s society which also encourages weight gain is a lack of exercise. Without exercise we burn very little energy, it could take up to three hours to burn off the energy in that bag of potato chips. However with a little exercise it’s possible to burn off those chips within an hour….. Yes ok, a WHOLE HOUR sounds too much to me too!
It’s not that I don’t like exercising; I already train over four hours each week. The way I see it is why ruin my chances of burning an extra load of stored body fat by eating junk. I would rather avoid the potato chips and eat more vegetables that will fill me quickly!
The thing is that once you realise the ease at which you can offset the delicate balance of calories in – calories expended I think it’s best to gradually omit junk foods from the diet.
